USPS Just Raised Shipping Rates Again — With No Warning

USPS raised Ground Advantage rates on July 25, 2026 with less than a day of notice. What online sellers in Lake County should know about rising shipping costs.

The Scene That Starts Everything

Saturday morning. You pour the coffee, open the laptop, and pull up your seller dashboard the way you do every morning — except this morning there is a banner you have never seen before. "USPS Ground Advantage rate update." You click it. Your stomach drops a little, because you know what "rate update" means when it appears without warning.

Rates went up. Yesterday. Effective immediately.

Not next quarter. Not after a sixty-day notice period. Yesterday, with less than twenty-four hours between the announcement and the new prices.

You have fourteen live listings with shipping folded into the price. A stack of labels priced at the old rates. And a quiet understanding that every package you ship from here on costs a little more than you budgeted.

It is ten cents on a three-to-five-pound Ground Advantage package, at first glance. Ten cents is nothing, right? One seller on the eBay boards put it better: the ten cents is not the problem. The problem is that USPS can now change the price of shipping with less than a day's notice — and there is not a thing you can do about it.

The Silent Rate Hike

Here is what happened, in plain terms.

On July 12, 2026, USPS put through a set of rate changes it actually announced. Fine. That is how it is supposed to work. But two weeks later — on Friday, July 24 — eBay warned sellers that USPS was raising Ground Advantage rates again, effective the very next day. eBay Labels rates for Ground Advantage packages weighing three to five pounds went up ten cents across every shipping zone.

That increase came through a program you have probably never heard of: USPS Connect eCommerce. It is the program that lets marketplaces and postage providers offer discounted rates to sellers like you. And here is the part that should make you sit up: USPS does not publicly announce rate changes for USPS Connect eCommerce. Sellers get the news when the marketplace gets the news, which is to say, the day before it happens.

eBay said it is "working closely with USPS" to help sellers stay ahead of the updates. That is a nice sentence. It does not lower your shipping costs.

USPS has been making more frequent rate changes this year — eBay said as much in its own announcement. Sellers on the discussion boards are counting this as the second rate increase in a single month. The pattern is not the price. The pattern is the silence.

What It Actually Feels Like

Put yourself back in that Saturday morning chair. You ship maybe fifteen packages a week — a mix of clothing, collectibles, and the occasional awkward box that fits nothing. Your shipping is priced into your listings. You did that on purpose, because buyers respond to "free shipping" and you built your store around it.

Now do the math. Fifteen packages a week, an average of fifteen cents more each — with the rural-zone increases some sellers are reporting, it can be far more than that. That is two dollars a week. Eight dollars a month. A hundred dollars a year — gone, silently, from a line item you set months ago.

And because the rate changes hit with no warning, you cannot plan around them. You cannot quietly adjust prices next Tuesday. You find out the way everyone finds out: on a Saturday, after the rates have already changed, staring at a banner.

That is the feeling. Not outrage at ten cents. The feeling is that you are running a business on top of a pricing system you cannot see, cannot predict, and cannot question.

Why It Should Not Be This Way

A price change is a normal part of commerce. Nobody expects shipping to cost the same forever. But a price change with less than twenty-four hours' notice is not a price change — it is an ambush.

You run a real business. You set prices, you plan inventory, you promise delivery dates. Every one of those decisions depends on knowing what shipping costs. When the cost of shipping changes without notice, every one of those decisions is made on bad information.

Here is the principle: people who are asked to pay more deserve to know before they are asked. The Postal Service exists to serve the public. It does not get to move the price tag while your back is turned.

What We See Every Day

We see the aftermath of rate changes like this every week at Mailbox Plus, at 7554 Fredle Drive in Concord Township.

An online seller walks in with a box and says, "Just ship it however is cheapest." They have been burned by a surprise increase before, and they have stopped pretending they can track it all themselves. They want someone who watches the rates so they do not have to.

Here is what we can do that a seller dashboard cannot: we quote all four carriers — USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL — on the same counter. When USPS raises Ground Advantage, we do not just pass the increase along. We check whether UPS Ground or FedEx Ground now wins the package. We check zone rates, weight breaks, and dimensional pricing, and we tell you the truth: sometimes USPS is still the right call, and sometimes it is not.

We are not owned by any carrier. There is no franchise agreement telling us which label to print. We are paid by you, the person standing at our counter — which means our incentive is to find the cheapest honest way to get your box where it is going.

And because we ship every day, we see rate changes the day they happen. We knew the July 12 changes. We know the July 25 changes. When the next silent increase lands, we will know that one too — and it will not cost you a Saturday morning.

How It Works

It is three steps, and none of them involve a dashboard banner:

  1. Walk in. Bring the box, or grab one of ours. We have boxes, tape, and packing materials on hand.
  2. Put it on the counter. We weigh it, measure it, and pull up live rates from all four carriers in front of you. You see the same numbers we see.
  3. Walk out. We print the label, hand you the tracking number, and your package is on its way — usually for less than the rate you would have paid printing it yourself.

Most packages are done in under three minutes. That includes the packing.

What You Lose by Not Acting

The ten cents is not the enemy. Here is what the silent rate hike actually costs you over time:

Money. Every unannounced increase that lands on a listing you priced months ago comes out of your margin. It does not come out of the buyer's pocket — it comes out of yours, because you already promised free shipping.

Time. Tracking rate changes, re-pricing listings, and re-running shipping math is real work. It is the kind of work that eats an hour a week and produces nothing you can sell. That is time you could spend on listings, sourcing, or actually selling.

Predictability. This is the expensive one. A shipping partner who quotes live rates across carriers removes the uncertainty. A seller who has to guess what shipping will cost next month is building a business on sand.

Your Afternoon After the Change

It is a Tuesday afternoon. You have three boxes in the back of the car and a stack of orders to get out. Instead of pulling up your dashboard and checking for banners, you drive to Mailbox Plus.

Route 306, turn onto Fredle Drive. You park, walk in, put the first box on the counter. We weigh it, pull up the rates, and show you the winner. Two dollars less than you expected, because FedEx took the package this week. You watch the label print. You are back in the car in four minutes.

That is the difference. Not just cheaper shipping — though usually it is. It is knowing that somebody is watching the rates so you do not have to. It is shipping your packages without the background hum of wondering when the next silent increase lands.

Bring It In

You do not need to track USPS rate changes alone. You do not need to wonder whether the label you are about to print is the cheapest one.

Bring your next box to Mailbox Plus at 7554 Fredle Drive in Concord Township. We will weigh it, quote it across all four carriers, and send it out for less than you expected — with the tracking number in your hand before you leave.

No dashboard banners. No surprises. Just the cheapest honest rate, every time.

“Great place with easy and fast shipping services. Frank was excellent! Not only was he friendly and professional, but went out of his way to find me the easiest and most affordable option to ship my golf clubs across country while I was visiting OH. Made things simple and my travels way easier.”

“Frank, the owner of Mailbox Plus in Concord Township by Lucky’s Market, is truly exceptional. He is brilliant, thoughtful, attentive, and takes the work of shipping and transportation seriously. I have been mailing sentimental items—some quite large and bulky—to different parts of the U.S., and Frank consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is handled with care. Most recently, my friend received a set of 10 collector plates, and they arrived safe and sound because they were packaged so exceptionally well. If you talk with Frank, you quickly learn that he has a real philosophy and a deep sense of care when it comes to shipping people’s belongings. He treats each item with respect, and that means so much. Beyond the quality of his work, Frank is simply a good man. He listened kindly while we rang up the transaction, and having such a friendly, caring person behind the counter made the experience even more meaningful. I am grateful for his help and highly recommend supporting this store.”

“Love this place! I pop in several times a week and have never had an issue! Makes shipping so easy and convenient! Owners are so sweet and easily approachable. They ship out through lots of carriers and offer a variety of shipping packaging options, making it a one stop shop!”
