How Chewy Prescription Mail-In Works

Pet prescription being sealed in a FedEx envelope at a shipping counter

When you order prescription medication for your pet on Chewy Pharmacy, you may need to mail in the original paper prescription before your order can ship. This is required by pharmacy regulations — Chewy cannot accept copies, scans, or photos.

If you select "Mail in prescription" at checkout, Chewy generates a FedEx QR code or printable label for you. That's where we come in.

What We Do

  1. You bring your original paper prescription from your vet and your FedEx QR code (or printed label) from Chewy's order details.
  2. We seal it up — we put your prescription in a FedEx envelope and seal it securely.
  3. We give you a drop-off receipt — proof that you handed it over, including the tracking number.
  4. Same-day pickup — if you drop off before 3 PM, your prescription goes out that day via FedEx.
  5. Chewy receives it — once Chewy Pharmacy gets your original prescription, your order typically ships within 1–2 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Get quick answers to the most common questions about packaging, carriers, pricing, and what to expect.

Do I need to order on Chewy first before coming in?
Yes. You must place your Chewy Pharmacy order and select "Mail in prescription" at checkout first. Chewy will then generate a QR code or printable shipping label in your order details. Bring that QR code or label along with your original paper prescription.
What if I already printed the FedEx label at home?
Perfect — bring the label and your original prescription. Place the prescription in your own envelope (9.5" x 12.5") if you have one, or we can provide one. Attach the label and drop it off. We seal it and hand it to FedEx for you.
What happens if I drop off after 3 PM?
Your prescription will still be sealed and prepped, but it will go out with the next day's FedEx pickup instead of same-day.
Can you print my FedEx label for me?
If you have the QR code from Chewy, yes — we can scan it and the FedEx label prints right here. You don't need a printer at home.
Do you charge for shipping the prescription to Chewy?
No — FedEx drop-off is provided at no additional cost by Chewy. The QR code or label they provide covers the shipping. We just handle the packaging and drop-off at no charge to you.
What if my vet gave me a paper prescription but I haven't ordered on Chewy yet?
You can place your Chewy order here in our store using your phone, or do it at home. Once you have the order number and QR code, bring everything back and we'll handle the rest.
Can Chewy ship gabapentin to Ohio?
Unfortunately, no. Chewy Pharmacy cannot ship gabapentin to Ohio (among 24+ restricted states). Other common medications like Simparica Trio, NexGard, Apoquel, and Heartgard are fully available and can be shipped to our address without issue.
What medications can Chewy Pharmacy fill?
Chewy Pharmacy carries FDA-approved medications for dogs, cats, horses, birds, reptiles, and small pets — including flea/tick prevention, allergy meds, pain relief, thyroid medication, antibiotics, and more. Browse their full catalog at chewy.com/b/pharmacy-2515.
